Well might be simpler. And some on both sides of politics won't like it.
Firstly, its mostly the fault of Conservative Parties.
Straight away you can tell those identifying as Conservatives won't like it & those of non or anti Conservative Parties will be smiling, laughing & fist bumping. (Maybe & maybe not for long)
Once it was WISE Progressives vs REAL Conservatives and on the edges were the fringes, the extremes. People that were of a political bent that was altogether seperate from the mainstream party they were in but that party had less to like out of the 2 mainstreamers & opposed the party they opposed the most. It wasn't such a big deal because generally their numbers were very small & they were regarded as tolerable fools who paid party membership fees, volunteered & bolstered numbers.
Then slowly as is usually the case when things are going good, decay sets in and the fringe elements of the left & the right started to build in society. Yes Universities have played a major role in rousing fools to metaphysical slaughter but where ever they came from they grew in numbers.
They were once not just fringes of each Major party, they were not really within the party values.
We could have easily had the Left, the Right, Wise Progressives & REAL Conservatives in the political landscape, all quite seperate but the extremes slowly built in the major parties & we're now in a devolved state where lots of people are claiming to be the sensible centre and everyone else is the bad guys.
Now if you're a career political grifter this is good thing as you have many you can demonise & if you're in a geographically small electorate you can ramp the noise and rouse fools to your side. You can remain in constant battle without actually achieving anything you claim is important. To the point that, as a grifter, you need the fight, the battle, the under dog status and the ability to demonise others by playing emotional empathy, sympathy, guilt, shame cards. You can likely get a reasonable political career and never actually fix anything. You bounty is claimed by being the agitator, the one yelling oppression, the one yelling victim, the one mocking authority and when you fail its proof positive you're the champion being unfairly targeted.
These are some of the Independents & the Greens.
In the bigger parties, its the Left & the Right that have caused the problems for all of us.
The WISE Progressives vs REAL Conservatives has devolved.
You know that old saying, don't argue with a stupid person, they'll drag you down to their level & beat you with experience? Its kinda that.
The Fringe left build in numbers and pioneered the guilt tactics the Greens, Teals & some independents are now mastering.
The once great ALP is now a hollow shell of what it used to be. Its built on left tactics now & there aren't so many "true believers" anymore, mostly they're true players.
The WISE Progressives have dwindled in numbers & louder more left & hard left players have drifted in.
Arguable perhaps but the guilt tactics reign supreme & sadly the REAL Conservatives have dwindled in numbers as they argued with the stupid people and were slowly beaten by experience. They argued on the Left's terms and got beaten and to try & beat them, they went more with those tactics and drifted away from real Conservativism.
We have very few of the old WISE Progressives vs REAL Consevrativism in Australian Parliaments nowadays.
Anyone who was reasonable and aligned with the old WISE Progressives vs REAL Conservatives paradigm would have not supported "the left" or the hard left OR "the right" or the Hard Right. Now though the left/hard left/right/hard right hold far more sway than ever.
As a result the 2 major parties, formerly WISE Progressives and REAL Conservatives are either blasted as being right/hard right or left/hard left. Its getting to the point where Conservatives are being labeled and regard by some as far right & even fascists. Progressives less so are being regarded as left or hard left of communists. In the case of Labor Party supporters or those we think are, some actually are openly Marxist & celebrate it. One social commentator who gets a good deal of TV/Radio/Newspaper time is Van Badham.
She's been on the Drum, the Project, ABC's QandA and yet on Twitter she openly posted she was Marxist, anyone want to talk Marxism to DM her...and then there's the photo of her and "my boys" 3 union officials including John Setka.
Marxist, Unionists, Actual Supporters of Employees or just pretend champions Grifting for very large personal wealth gains...well you can argue all day.
The Left is not really aligned with the WISE Progressives we had & now need.
The Right is not really aligned with the REAL Progressives we had & now need.
I blame Conservatives for not strongly, clearly, repeatedly & loudly setting out the Conservative values & how they think it benefits both employers & employees. Instead we had the Conservatives edged out by people (well intentioned or not) who decided somehow instead of engaging with WISE Progressives, used Left tactics on the Left. Keep your standards & values vague so you have room to move any way the wind is blowing. Predominantly use emotion, guilt, shame & demonisation sleight of hand & ocassionally use facts, figures & objective data...when you have to. Oh & don't for get mocking in Parliament, in the press & in Social Media cos y'know, people love a good meme.
As such both sides have devolved. Had Antifa, Qnon, Nazis or any other whacko fringe appeared in the 60s, 70s, 80s and even as late as 2000 both the major parties would have stood side by side & opposed them. I think both sides would now but only one side would actually be credited as doing so legitimately because only one side effectively harnesses "empathy" or fake empathy.
We're in trouble. We'll stay in trouble until conservatives regain the parties that were previously dominated by REAL Conservatives. Sorry, Morrison wasn't nor was Banks, Turnbull and a number of others. Anyone that applies for Labour Party membership with the view to run for office, fails then applies to the complete opposite side & gets membership, gets pre-selection and gets elected, gets into Cabinet & eventually becomes Leader & Prime Minister...we have a serious problem.
The only probable return to a better way, a way where its predominately WISE Progressives vs REAL Conservatives is if the Conservatives grown in numbers, properly present & expain Conservative Values and Aims...and stick to them without those tactics the left and the right brought into Legislatures that pushed out Progressives & Conservatives.
If the Conservatives get that fixed THEN they present a proper viable alternative.
Then those who are WISE Progressives will not only wake up & fix their landscape, they'll do better and we'll all do better.

Progressivism alone is not the answer
The real, the sole answer is WISE Progressives vs REAL Conservatives.
Once we get to that point we have the best thing to reduce the influence of the Left & the Right, of the Hard Left & the Hard Right.
So yes I blame Conservative Parties for losing vision & their proper place but the real change to avoid real danger rests with them first correcting and the Progressives following.
Its the only way but it needs to hurry.
